Done, but not done… M Shield 2.0
Sunday, May 16th, 2010 Posted in About Me, Humour
Hey all! After a huge amount of time spent building this thing, it is now ready to be displayed to the public.
I can finally sit back and look at my portfolio page and say that it is ready for public consumption. I have completely rebuilt my website bringing it up to date. This is the result… So feel free to look around.
It started a couple of weeks ago. I decided that if I were to make a good impression to possible employers, I needed to improve my website. I first envisioned that I would simply add my latest work to my portfolio page and theme the blog to match the rest of the website. So one evening I sat down an looked into a number of tutorials to help me with the mighty task of creating a theme for my WordPress blog installation. I followed the fantastic “WordPress for Designers” screencast series by the talented Drew Douglass (Linky: Drew Douglass on Themeforest.net) to help me understand the basics of how to build a theme for WordPress. He starts getting into breaking down a .PSD file at around day 10, but for some reason he doesn’t finish it all. Not to worry, I then knew enough of the basics so I could theme the rest myself.
After watching a couple of days, I realised that I would be better if I simply rebuilt my entire website in WordPress. I decided to do this because I felt it would be easier to maintain, keep up to date and use all of the great features that it provides on the whole of my website, not just the blog. As I was looking at my .PSD file of my theme ready to break down I though, you know what, sod it… Lets redesign that too!
So a day later, and with a new improved, more web 2.0 looking theme I started to theme and build the entire website in WordPress.
Long story short, multiple hours and days passed with mistakes made and learnt, cursing and shouting at my laptop to work when I want it to, I have finished. At least for the moment. My main aim was to finish the website with similar amounts of work as available on my old website. Now that is completed I can send out my CVs to possible employers to try and find a work placement. The next steps over the coming month, is to organise my work collection, grouping together any other photography and artwork that is worthy to put on separate pages in my portfolio. This will add to my current collection of websites.
So… I, Matthew Shield, declare “M Shield 2.0 Online Portfolio”… Open!
Please be gentle with it, despite me checking every corner and hole for bugs and broken links, there’s bound to be one still left.
So for the moment I am done…. But I am no where near finished.

Im back
Saturday, March 6th, 2010 Posted in About Me, BAIMP, Humour, Uni Life, University
I can’t help but say I told you so!
Sorry I just had to get that out of my system. At the start of this blog I said it wouldn’t take long before it went stale. However, after a considerable break I am back and writing another blog post. The last post left off with me finishing year 1 at uni. I am now well into year 2 and I have almost finished it!
Yes it has been that long since posts! But without much further delays and without going into all the stuff that I have been up to (because quite frankly it would be boring) I will update you with that I am currently working on.
Behold the games project! A twelve week assignment in groups of 4 or 5 with the aim to create some sort of interactive game in either Unity3D or Flash. What initially started off as being a simple project in my eyes has turned out to be a lot more difficult that I imaginged.
As with all my projects my ambitions far surpass my abilities but with the help from the rest of the group we may once again be victorious!
That is if I don’t collapse in a heap in the uni mac labs a bumbling mumbling idiot due to the sheer amount of scripting that has to be done.
The reason why I have managed to spare the time to write a blog post is because my laptop has decided that it requires a hard drive scan to fix errors. I started it initially at 9am this morning and it’s now 15:15. There is only so much work you can do on the iPhone. But the good news is that I have managed to make a considerable dent in the number of non essential items on my to do list (this blog post being one of them) bad news is that I am running out of time for those important to dos.
Anyway I have bored you enough with my ramblings and I have spent too much of your precious time already so all I can say is thanks for taking an interest in reading this far down and have a good day, what’s left of it anyway.
The long gone but since returned for a while,
Matthew Shield
Oh and before I forget again, I have finished my portfolio I just have to theme this blog to suit (another item on the todo list)
ok ok I’m going now

Out of Class Exercise (16th March 2009)
Monday, March 16th, 2009 Posted in About Me, BAIMP, Humour, University
For a seminar on the 10th March, we have been set an out of class exercise of 300 words to be posted up on the blog to be displayed in the 5pm lecture on the 16th… Here is the question set in brief:
We’d like you to try some identity tourism. Choose an ‘identity’ which
you consider alien to your own: perhaps a different gender; but perhaps
also a different racial or ethnic group than your own; maybe even a
different species!
Find out more about this identity/role. What is their life like? How
do they see the world? What are their concerns? What are they doing
now?
When you’ve explored some of these background issues, we’d like you to
write (about 300) words from the point of view of your chosen identity,
and post it on your blog. We’ll use the work you do for this in next week’s IMT lecture (Folk Cultures / Global Cultures).
Now here is my contribution:
The Life of an Anthro
The life of an anthropomorphic is an interesting one. Being half animal half human has both advantages and disadvantages. Having characteristic traits of both humans and an animal allows you to expand your view on life. Lets start with the basics. As an ‘Anthro’ you have physical traits of both species combined together.
The average anthro usually looks more animal than human. For example, you have the animal ears, fur and tail. The face usually consists of a muzzle (with or without whiskers depending on the species), animalistic ears and of course fur. The body however has quite a few human features. Anthro’s tend to walk upright on the back legs like humans and often have paws as hands, though usually feature opposable thumbs help with holding objects. Further down the body you have the animal tail. Possibly helping with balance, it can also be used for helping show expression or emotion. The feet are again, usually paws however the leg can either be digitigrade (imagine a curved dogleg) or plantigrade (human legs where you walk on the soles on the ground).
Anthro’s tend to be more connected to nature. They base their lives on instincts, and if they are not careful, they can let their instincts control them. For example, a deer anthro could jump or bolt at the slightest movement made by other objects, or canine anthro’s chase after Frisbees. Having animal features allows them to extend human traits, such as a canine’s sense of smell for detecting fear or mood of a person.
Though quite often, anthro’s are considered to be genetic ‘mutations’ and go against the laws of nature. Some beings become scared of the unknown and so sometimes anthro’s can be regarded as a threat to society. But, if anything, anthropomorphic beings, being connected more to nature, tend to have more unconditional love for the things around them.
I could go on, but I am limited to 300 words. So there you have it. Process it how you like. I’d like to hear some of your views on the subject.

Animator vs. Animation
This flash clip created by Alan Becker is suitable for the family, but its mainly aimed at 13-15 year olds and upwards to early 30s and 40s. This is because the animation is based on the flash software, and so animators and the more computer literate would understand it more and appreciate it more. However saying that, it is enjoyable and suitable for everybody due to its humour. The older generation would appreciate the detail gone into creating the animation in flash and mimicing the flash interface, and the younger generation would appreciate the humorous events involving stick men and the “computer mouse,” using fairly “childish” weapons.
The Full version of animation can be found here

Every one else has had more sex than me – TISM
This flash animation is a music video for the band TISM. It features a cartoon rabbit that acts as the main singer and a number of other rabbits as the general public. Each rabbit has a number on their front indicating how many times they have had sex. This is a fairly adult animation and is aimed at the older generation. The animation is slightly humorous and appeals to a wide adult audience, as it does not feature any “explicit” material. It is simply made, with black and white line drawings, only featuring colour in certain parts to emphasise points. Due to the nature of the song, it is not suitable for a younger audience, although the animation does not warn the viewer of the content.
The full animation can be found here
Top Cat
Top Cat is a children’s animation series produced by Hanna-Barbera that ran for 30 episodes from 1961 to 1962. The main target audience is aimed at children as it features cartoonish characters, bright colourful scenes, and events and situations that children would find amusing. The dialog is very simple and clear, so younger children will be able to understand it and keep up. The animations themselves are detailed with colourful settings, however the character movements and slightly faded backgrounds are kept fairly simple allowing the children to concentrate on the characters and not get distracted. This animation is mainly aimed at children under the age of about 8, however more recently, an adult may enjoy watching an episode or two due to a “nostalgia” factor as they may have watched it when they were children.
Monsters Inc. is a 3D Computer Generated animation produced by Pixar. This animation is aimed at the family environment allowing both children and adults to enjoy the film. The film features high quality, detailed and colourful computer generated characters. There is great attention to detail that the adults can enjoy, along with some humorous jokes that only adults would understand. The children would appreciate the colourful imagery as well as the story plot. With a fairly simple dialog and “cute” characters, children would be able to understand most of the storyline, however it has been developed (as with most Pixar films) so that you can understand most of the story through sounds alone.
